POLS 3001-001: Political Analysis

Research Design and Analysis Project

Fall 2022

For this project, you will analyze a data set and write a report of around 1,000 words or less summarizing a compelling relationship or story you identified in the data using both descriptive statistics and statistical analysis. Along with the assignment, you MUST submit the R script file you used for the project in Canvas. This file will be a .R file. Students who fail to include their R script file (or include a version of the file that is not in a .R format) will receive a zero on this project.

Research Question (5 points)

You will begin by identifying a research question. You may come up with your own or   use one of the options below. You may NOT use a research question we have used in class or in a previous assignment. Students who do will receive a zero on this project.

Independent and Dependent Variables (10 points)

Next, you will identify your independent and dependent variables and how they are        being measured (include the data set you are using, the specific variables you are using to measure each, a description of the variable, and an explanation of each variable’s     values).

Descriptive Statistics (30 points)

Summarize each of your variables separately using descriptive statistics. This should include both numerical (e.g. mean, median, or frequency distribution) and graphical    summaries (e.g. histogram or bar chart).

Hypotheses (5 points)

Propose an alternative hypothesis that you plan to test in your statistical analysis. State the null hypothesis.

Data Analysis (50 points)

Summarize your variables together using descriptive statistics. This may include both numerical (two-way frequency tables or correlation) and graphical summaries (boxplot or scatterplot).

Identify the appropriate statistical test to use to analyze your two variables and explain why. Run your statistical analysis and provide the test statistic, p-value, and degrees of freedom (where it is provided).

What do you learn about the relationship between your two variables? Use all of the   information you learn from this data analysis section, but also the descriptive statistics section to discuss the relationship you find. Explain the specific information you are    using to inform your response here.

What do your findings say about your null and alternative hypotheses? Explain the specific information you are using to inform your response here.

Research Question Ideas

●   How does class size impact the likelihood of graduating? (use the STAR data set (DSS folder))

●   How does age affect support for Brexit? (use the BES data set (DSS folder) and be sure to remove the NA responses)

How does gender impact voter registration status? (use the CES data set)

●   How does gun ownership affect support for making it easier for people to obtain a concealed-carry permit? (use the CES data set)

●   How does voter registration status impact an individual’s likelihood of contacting a public official? (use the CES data set)

●   How does attending a political protest affect an individual’s approval for Congress in 2020? (use the CES data set)

●   How does level of education impact an individual’s feelings toward the police (use the ANES data set)

●   How does gender affect an individual’s feelings toward Vice Presidential candidate, Kamala Harris? (use the ANES dataset)
