PHYS5041 Nano and Atomic Scale Imaging 1 – Report Task
November 2021
Having gained knowledge of important techniques used to characterise materials at the nanometre and atomic scale, you have been asked by a company to investigate a coating system for a tool that they are producing. The structure is shown below.
Second phase
particles
Metal alloy |
The surface may not be entirely flat and the interface to the metal may not be entirely flat either. The coating should contain a matrix phase (ochre yellow) and harder precipitates (green).
Compositions are:
• Substrate: iron-based alloy
• Coating: a metal compound with some light elements such as C or N, especially in the particles
Total thickness of coating is about 10 µm with the hard particles smaller than 1 µm.
You are required to deliver a report covering your potential solution to characterise the structure and tell the manufacturer as much as you can about it, with the following requirements:
• The report should be a maximum of 8 pages long, and longer reports will not be read
beyond page 8.
You should:
• Propose one or more instruments that you would use in the analysis and specifically how you would use them (e.g. which techniques or modes of operation would be used)
• Describe (briefly) the key principles of operation of any techniques you choose and detail the kind of information that they would reveal
• Explain what information you would be able to determine about the structure using your proposed methodology
• Explain the limits of the information that could gleaned from this analysis, such as chemical sensitivity, spatial resolution or visibility of specific components
• Include relevant references in the document to back up any claims you make – these must be archival sources, such as papers from peer-reviewed journals or published books, online encylopedia references are not acceptable. The only web references acceptable would be to specific pieces of software, if you felt it necessary to reference any specific software packages. References must be listed in a format that makes them easy to find (e.g. volume, year and page number for a paper, good examples of referencing can be found in any good academic journal from any reputable publisher).
IMPORTANT: You must only identify yourself by your 7 digit student number in the report and in the title thereof. Reports must be uploaded as pdf documents.
