CHEM 1027A F22 Chemistry Connection Assignment
Students will submit one (1) Chemistry Connection Assignment via OWL, due November 30. The purpose of this individual assignment will be for students to not only discover and research recent examples of chemical discoveries and news on their own, but to make connections between these and the course topics covered.
In this assignment, students will be asked to:
• Identify and research a recent discovery or news article (within 3 years) that involves chemistry and/or chemical concepts.
• Describe the problem or challenge that the article is highlighting or attempting to address by providing sufficient context, background information, and citations (where needed).
• Make connections between the chosen topic and the course content, where possible.
• Provide a high-level summary of the chemistry involved, including explanations of relevant background chemical concepts.
• Describe the novelty or significance of the study or article.
Chemistry Connection assignments should be no more than 5 pages (including any images and references), doubled spaced at 12 point font, and will be graded on the rubric below.
Example topics include:
• greenhouse gases and climate change
• recyclable or biodegradable plastics
• emerging nanotechnologies
• new 3D printing technologies
• COVID-19 related discoveries
• chemical dyes and tattoos
• gene editing
Students are encouraged to seek out topics that interest them most, and can make use of example resources below:
• https://www.chemistryworld.com/
It is not expected that students provide in-depth explanations of complex chemical concepts related to the discoveries/articles cited, but students should research and include the needed background information to help a nonexpert reader understand 1) why the article is significant and 2) where and how the chemistry is related. For example, when discussing greenhouse gases: explain what these gases are and how they contribute to the warming effect. If discussing tattoos and chemical dyes – explain what they are (organic or inorganic), why they are coloured, etc.
